Soft Shades When measuring for Roman or Balloon shades you need to decide on an inside or outside mount first.  For inside mounts measure the exact width and length inside the frame.   Inside Mount         Frame Mount              Wall Mount   If you would like to cover the window frame and want the mount board to be attached to the frame, measure the exact width of the whole frame and the length would be from the very top of the window frame down to the length you desire.  If you want an outside mount to the wall which completely covers the window frame and then some.  Measure the complete area you wish to cover and be sure to account for 1 1/2" above the frame for the mounting board and hardware.  As you can see from the instructions above the finished size of the shade, which includes the thickness of the mounting board, will be exactly the same as the measurements given.
